마커스 블레인은 커피를 절대 식히지 않았다.
그에게 카페인은 분석의 연료였고,
생각은 탄환처럼 쏟아져 나왔다.
Marcus Blaine never let his coffee go cold.
To him, caffeine was the fuel of analysis—
and thoughts came like bullets.
“죽인 순서.
전형적인 연쇄 살인범들과는 다르다.”
그는 벽에 걸린 시체 사진들을 바라보며 말했다.
“The order of killings…
It doesn’t follow the typical serial killer profile,”
he said, studying the photos of the bodies on the wall.
“그는 복수하지 않는다.
교훈을 남긴다.”
“He’s not avenging.
He’s teaching.”
그의 손에는 두 사람의 이름이 적힌 리스트가 있었다.
브랜든 스틸, 제럴드 벤턴.
그리고… 데이빗 리스.
In his hand was a list with three names:
Brandon Steele, Gerald Benton—
and David Reese.
“범행 대상은 모두 법적으로 처벌받지 않은 자들.
‘정의의 공백’ 속에서 면죄부를 얻은 악인들.”
“All victims were criminals
who walked free due to legal technicalities—
monsters in the gaps of justice.”
그는 팀을 향해 말했다.
“이건 범죄가 아니라
하나의 선언이다.”
He turned to his team.
“This isn’t just crime.
It’s a declaration.”
수사관 하나가 물었다.
“그럼 우린 지금 테러리스트를 쫓고 있는 겁니까?”
마커스는 고개를 저었다.
One agent asked,
“So are we hunting a terrorist now?”
Marcus shook his head.
“아니. 철학자야.
피로 글을 쓰는 자.”
“No.
A philosopher—
writing in blood.”
그는 병원의 CCTV 영상을 반복 재생했다.
어떤 장면에서는 그림자처럼 움직이는 실루엣이
벽 너머로 스쳐 지나갔다.
He replayed the hospital CCTV footage.
In one frame, a shadow-like silhouette
slid across the far wall.
“그는 우리가 지켜보고 있다는 걸 안다.
그리고 우릴 시험하고 있어.”
“He knows we’re watching.
And he’s testing us.”
마커스는 홀로 중얼였다.
“어떻게 끝날까?”
“심판자와의 싸움은…
도덕이 아닌 신념의 싸움이야.”
“How does this end?”
Marcus whispered to himself.
“This isn’t a battle of morals anymore—
It’s a war of belief.”
